Returning back to natural hair is so fittingly described because that is exactly what it is. You return back to your hair as it grows from your head. Contrary to some dandy information floating around, any hair care expert worth his/her onions will tell you the only two ways to return back to natural hair after getting it permed is through
- Transitioning
To transition to natural hair simply means allowing the relaxed hair parts to grow out while taking care of the new rowing natural/virgin hair. This is very simple and it means you don’t have to cut off your hair, you simply need to take of the hair more a la deep conditioning treatments if possible weekly or every two weeks to make sure it receives all the moisture it needs. This also makes it easier to comb especially as you are no longer applying relaxers to the new growth. It is actually wonderful seeing your natural hair coming out and your scalp resting from the months or years of relaxer application. During this period, you can also use wigs, braids and so on while learning how to care for the new natural hair. As the new growth comes out, regular trims are done to the relaxed parts and in about a year, almost all the relaxed parts should be gone leaving behind completely, natural, perm-free hair.
- The big Chop
With this method, you simply do not wait for the new growth but plunge right in and cut off all the permed parts. It is also a simple alternative but a bit challenging for some because this means either carrying your hair like that until it grows out or wearing wigs though out that year. As hair grows about 6 to 7 inches in a year, by a year’s time, your new growth would be healthy, natural and if you did a good job conditioning it, it would be thriving.
Ladies, let no one deceive you, aside from these two methods above, there is no magic pill to reverse chemically relaxed hair to natural hair. All you need to do is choose one of the steps above, do your proper deep conditioning, learn what you can about natural hair and enjoy your new hair growth.
