Marcus’s looked out of the window and saw an odd figure crunched on all fours, head down, a shadow cast in front of them where their neck should probably be. From where he was sitting, driving the truck at slow pace because of the snow it looked like a headless animal. What would a headless animal be doing out in -20 degrees and how would they even walk. He chuckled at himself at the preposterousness of his thoughts thinking he may just be seeing wrong things because he was tired. This was a safe neighborhood, certainly not a hunting ground and there were no funny headless animals running amok, his ever present, sometimes overactive sense of reason reminded him.
He considered driving past as he didn’t want to be caught up in any funny situation, but the creature moved catching his attention, and obviously caught his friends eyes too “Would you look at that man?” Steve his partner yelled at him. “It’s a girl! What on earth is she doing on all fours with head bent like that?”.
It was out of his hands now, he thought wryly to himself. They couldn’t just drive by leaving her there on her knees and elbows. They stopped the Car and got out, both heading for the other side of the road.
The girl looked at her pretty pink nails while on the floor, one of them now twisted and broken off. They had cost her 250 dollars to do just a few minutes before she was dropped off by the gentleman who paid for them and insisted on dropping her and her friend off. She had given him a fake address because she didn’t know him that well but took his number.
After doing her research on him she will decide if she wanted to see him again or not. A girl could never be too careful in this world. Leila her friend had gone off to her school apartment and she had started the walk home, admiring her hands. The rhinestones in them had seemed like they were gleaming back at her as if winking at a sacred secret only two of them knew. She loved nails and always got a new pair every month. Matter of fact she loved everything that had to do with prepping and priming up as a female except for the monthly bloody time stamp.
The beauty primping helped her deal with the many, not so palatable parts of femaleness. Her mother called her peacock because of how she always primed and made sure everything looked sparkling on her before stepping out. Never mind that a peacock was male. This evening, as she continued walking on the ice, still focused on her nails, she missed the melted strip of ice on the floor and before she knew it she was on her knees in this awkward position. Next thing she heard was deep voices behind her. She couldn’t tell who they were as every time she struggled to turn or get, she slipped back into the melted ice and hurt her knees more.
“Looks like we’re going to have to pull you off the floor doesn’t it?” The voice behind her said. It was gruff, rough and somehow, despite its roughness, soothing on her desperately frayed nerves. Perhaps because she knew it signaled to her mind that help was here or perhaps it was another reason, she could not be sure. Both men held her up, one holding each hand and carefully guided her out of the slimy snow. Her knees were bleeding and bruised and her elbows were the same. Her tablet screen and phone crashed with only a green light blinking. She didn’t know when she started crying, making embarrassing hiccups as pain shot through head brain. The men asked her if she could walk or would prefer, they drove her. She wanted to say no as she didn’t know them but at the same time she couldn’t walk and her phones were now useless. She let them guide her to the car and got in, her heart in her stomach, as she could not say for sure if she was creating more problems or getting rescued from one. They put her address in the car GPS, made small talk to find out if she lived alone or not and asked her name. “My name is Lila” was the last word she said before the dark night turned into blobs of sparkling dots. The last thing she remembered was a pale, large hand coming towards her, touching and covering her face.
